This timeline allows the editor to make quick changes to the overall timeline without zooming out of the base timeline.

There’s an additional timeline that displays all timeline clips at full length with minimalistic design - no clip thumbnail, no clip name, no audio waveform. Even the trim tools and selection tools have been combined into one. It’s designed to work on a smaller monitor, so for those working on a MacBook on set, or content creators working on the go, there’s now a larger field of view of the timeline and viewer, which isn’t bogged down by unnecessary panels or fixed UI settings. Petty explains that editing has evolved into two cultures: more traditional editors and people like YouTubers who are editing 2-3 videos a day and bypassing the typical editing structure. If the edit page is about capability, the cut page is about speed. The Cut Page is the 7th page added to Da Vinci Resolve, and it’s designed to cut the complexity of the edit page and to increase the efficiency of quick editing. Grant preferred the days when you would just drag all your media onto the timeline, cut, and delete what you didn’t need. Let’s take a look at what’s new - specifically the new editing features.īlackmagic founder Grant Petty said after a night of watching training videos that he felt disgruntled by trainers who spent time setting up bins and organizing their media. Before NAB, I assumed the majority of the updates would only be small course corrections and a few requested features, but some of the new additions pack a powerful punch. Well, it’s that time of the year again, and at NAB, Blackmagic announced Resolve 16. And with each iteration of Resolve, we saw a number of other updates, both big and small. Finally, in version 15 we were treated to the Fusion page, where Resolve users could eventually employ advanced VFX compositing without leaving the software. In 14 (they skipped 13), Blackmagic added the Fairlight audio page, a page dedicated to professional audio mixing.

In 12.5 the editing page was finally good enough to pull users away from Premiere. Blackmagic, on the other hand, has completely reinvigorated Resolve with each new update. It seems like forever ago that we had such a substantial addition to an Adobe application that also made this much noise.

The internet has been ablaze this week with the news of Adobe’s content-aware fill tool in the spring After Effects update. And once again, this update is full of useful features you need to unpack. Blackmagic Design has announced DaVinci Resolve 16 at NAB 2019.
